In a recent statement, Intel's CEO, Pat Gelsinger, highlighted the growing importance of semiconductor supply chains in key Asian countries, including India, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Gelsinger emphasized that Intel, with its presence in Malaysia and strong supply chains in China and Taiwan, is strategically positioned to benefit from the increasing significance of manufacturing capabilities in areas like Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. He expressed the company's intention to establish semiconductor fabrication, packaging, and manufacturing units in these geographies, aiming to create a robust global supply chain.
Gelsinger announced Intel's commitment to invest over $100 billion in the next five years to enhance semiconductor capacities in the United States. Earlier plans included the construction of one of the largest chip fabrication plants globally in Ohio, with a total investment of $100 billion. Gelsinger emphasized that the rise in computing power and the global demand for improved and cost-effective computing solutions position semiconductors and processors as key players in determining the future of geopolitics. He stressed that achieving better performance per unit of energy should be an industry-wide mission as companies continue to innovate in chip design and manufacturing.
Intel is actively collaborating with original design manufacturers (ODMs) and manufacturing partners in various locations, including Guadalajara in Mexico, Ireland, Israel, Poland, and Germany. Gelsinger also announced the upcoming launch of a new processor chip for laptops on December 14, with the capability to run generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) chatbots locally on laptops and computers, eliminating the need for these chatbots to connect to cloud systems.
