LG Energy Solution and Qualcomm Collaborate to Revolutionize Battery Management Systems
LG Energy Solution Ltd (LGES), South Korea’s leading battery maker, has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to accelerate the commercialization of system-on-chip-based battery management system (SoC-based BMS) diagnostic solutions. This collaboration highlights their commitment to advancing cutting-edge technology in the electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage industries.
Integrating Advanced Technology for Next-Generation BMS
Under this agreement, LGES will integrate its advanced BMS software with Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis. The integration will also extend to Qualcomm's Snapdragon Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform, enabling seamless connectivity and diagnostics.
This partnership builds on their earlier announcement of a technical consortium to develop a next-generation BMS diagnostic solution for EVs. “Through the process of technology sharing and validation, we have demonstrated the excellence of our BMS technology through synergy with Qualcomm Technologies. Now, we are officially embarking on the development for commercialisation,” said an LGES official.
With over 8,000 patents in BMS technology, LGES has achieved a safety diagnostic detection rate of over 90% and boasts an industry-leading degradation diagnostic error rate of approximately 1%.
Expanding Energy Storage Solutions in the U.S.
In addition to advancements in BMS technology, LGES has secured a multi-year deal with Excelsior Energy Capital LP to supply 7.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage systems (ESS). These units will be manufactured at LGES’ U.S. plants, with the first delivery scheduled for April 2026.
This agreement follows another significant deal with Terra-Gen Power Holdings II, LLC, to supply 8 GWh of ESS units over four years, extending through 2029. These contracts underscore LGES’s expanding footprint in the U.S. renewable energy market and its commitment to fostering sustainable energy solutions.
Driving the Future of Battery Innovation
The collaboration between LGES and Qualcomm represents a major step toward revolutionizing battery diagnostics and management for EVs. Alongside its growing presence in the energy storage market, LGES continues to solidify its position as a global leader in innovative and sustainable energy technologies.
This partnership and the new ESS deals highlight LGES’s mission to enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency in battery systems while addressing the growing demand for clean energy infrastructure worldwide.
